I wrote, produced and performed a show called 'What Makes a Man Bare All?' for the Adelaide Fringe 2004. It was an unusual show. I told a number of deeply embarrassing, and true, stories about my life.
It was a comedy show, but I also tried to present some serious and cerebral material. Looking back, I think I was experimenting with humiliation, self-deprecation and suffering on stage.
Some nights, the show went quite well. Most nights, the show was just awful. I not only suffered - I died up on stage.
Reviewers hated the show. I think the show left some of my audiences feeling a bit confused. The show actually left me feeling rather confused. I started to doubt some of the things I had been doing and did not write or perform for about a year.
I am now proud of this show. I believe it was original and sincere and genuinely funny in parts. I am yet to see anything like it. We were lucky to catch what I think was the best show on tape and you can watch or listen to segments of the show using the links on the left hand side. You can listen to the whole show using the link below.
