The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) recently hosted a series of Community Information Days around the country to “showcase a number of changes that will be taking place in 2013 … including the overhaul of century-old laws”. AMSA invited “interested community members to attend the information sessions … to learn more about the core areas of AMSA’s business and how it may impact their business or lifestyle”.
I reflected on my business and lifestyle and contemplated an overhaul of my own.
Perhaps now would be the right time for me to develop that much needed new speciality … martime law. It has [...]
“I’m a lawyer,” I said. “And I have a client who sends me a Valentine’s Day card every year.”
It was early February, and I was at Surry Hills library introducing myself to the group at a ‘Crafty Evening’. The invitation promised “an evening of red hearts, cherubs and love song dedications” and everything crafty needed to make a Valentine’s Day card “for that special someone”.
The special someone I had in mind was my (fictional) client.
“This year,” I explained, “I want to make a Valentine’s Day card for her.”
There were about a dozen attendees – mostly women – and the [...]
Performing my duties as a reigning Monopoly champion, I am interviewed by James Valentine of ABC Radio about Monopoly replacing the ‘iron’ token with a ‘cat’. In an interesting take on my name, James introduces me as ‘Anthony Hoo-ya’.

When I heard about two young lawyers who planned to abseil down a skyscraper for charity, I was impressed. When I learned that they also fear heights, I thought this might be a spectacle worth watching.
I rang one of the brave young lawyers, Aaron Allegretto of Herbert Smith Freehills. We made arrangements so I could accompany him and his colleague, Ciara White of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, on the day. Aaron emailed to confirm:
“I have also arranged a ‘media’ pass … so that you can access the roof at the same time as us.”
To be considered ‘media’ was nice – despite [...]
In my capacity as a reigning state Monopoly Champion, I am interviewed by Liz Ellis of ABC Radio about Hasbro’s plan to replace one of the Monopoly tokens. I talk Monopoly tokens, tactics and history while exploding (and propagating) a few Monopoly myths with talk back callers. I do love talking about Monopoly.

My speech in the NSW Young Lawyer’s Golden Gavel public speaking competition in 2010.
Competitors are assigned a topic at random less than 24 hours before the event. My topic was ‘Barristers – without solicitors they’re really just fluff and stuffing’. 500+ lawyers watch the event.
This was the last year I am ‘young’ enough to compete so I went for broke and tried to put on a real show. I also took the opportunity to made fun of: the President of Young Lawyers, the President of the Lawyer Society and the Honourable Justice Bergin Chief Judge in Equity of [...]
I set up my ‘free legal advice’ stall in Glebe. Two young men sat down and said they were sick of being hassled by the police. I told them that the best thing to do would be to avoid the police in question. I also told them how to make a complaint about the police.
I recorded the conversation and it was broadcast on 2SER’s law show ‘Radio Atticus’. You can listen below:

Anthony’s 2004 Adelaide Fringe debut takes us on a journey that bares all. With musical support from Gary and Rob (and constant interruptions by Michael Hicks), the show features such unusual explorations as:
• why spotted ties send the wrong message
• the rejection letter poem
• the army, cocaine, grenades and me
• why thinking about work can actually increase arousal
• losing your virginity; beware the dark blue ring
• hard up at the puppetry of the penis auditions
• the brighter side of breaking your penis
• a long weekend sleeping out with the homeless
If there is a place in hell for you [...]
